Ship recycling has many names, also called ship breaking, ship cracking, ship dismantling, and ship demolition. Ship-breaking is a type of ship disposal involving the breaking up of ships for either a source of parts, which can be sold for re-use, or for the extraction of raw materials, chiefly scrap.
Whether or not the ship is being recycled in a RESPONSIBLE way, whether or not the yard is practicing safe practices, whether or not Hazardous waste is being handled or not. These are some of the many concerns which are to be stated with facts and reported back to the ship owners.
SOS India provides a Pre-Audit service to the ship owners, so that due diligences can be done about the actual compliance of yard before that ship is sent there, for recycling.
After the review of pre-audit, ship-owners may decide about which of the following methods of recycling monitoring is best suited & cost efficient for them:
A Ship Specific Recycling Plan (SSRP), In accordance with the 2011 Guidelines for the development of the Ship Recycling Plan. These guidelines provide ship owners and managing agents with recommendations for the development of a SRP that complies with the requirements of the 2009 Hong Kong Convention and the Ship Recycling Facility to develop a ship-specific SRP IMO MEPC.196(62).
The Ship Recycling Facility Plan (SRFP) is the main document that is needed, prior to a ship being brought to the recycling yard. This document will outline to the ship-owner in order to incorporate all relevant information into the SRP that might affect its safe and environmentally safe recycling. This information is taken from Parts I, II & III Tables A, B, C & D of the Inventory Hazardous Materials survey and the SRFP should provide sufficient detail to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the production processes.
