  • Most of the labor dismantle the ships without PPE or heavy machinery which is mostly dangerous.
  • Moreover, some shipbreaking practices have highly concerning environmental and human impacts, releasing materials such as oil, asbestos and toxic paints into the local environment, and disrupting biodiversity.
  • So proper management of these will make ship recycling in reducing impact on human and environment.

Training Sessions for Worker’s Safety

India is a world leader in ship recycling. Despite a number of improvements brought about in working conditions over the years, the image of the ship recycling industry continues to be poor in matters of worker safety and environmental protection.

With the increasingly stringent regulatory requirements – initiated by HKC and EU – coming into play, the Indian ship recycling industry is gearing up to enhance their safety standards through training of their employees.

SOS INDIA provides training sessions to the ship recycling yard’s employees by developing and delivering at the yard, a highly customized training session. This is aimed to enhance the awareness of the workers and supervisors with regard to the risks involved in the ship recycling industry and to implement safe work practices.

Hazmat Awareness Training

The presence of hazardous materials on ships are commonplace and are unlikely to go away as they are necessary for the construction and maintenance of a vessel. This may be exposed to the labors when they dismantle the ship. Asbestos, for example, is one of the most common materials found on board and is used primarily in the walls and doors of an engine room due to its thermal insulation and fire-resistant properties. However, it is also extremely hazardous when it is broken up and can lead to fatal diseases if inhaled. Long-term exposure to heavy metals like lead or mercury (which can be found in paints, batteries, etc) can also cause irreversible neurological damage.

Hazmat Awareness Training

This hazardous awareness course will help crews, yard employees, hse officials, and yard owners understand Hazmats. without having a thorough understanding of hazardous management. It could be involved in major mishaps and have an impact on the environment.

The biggest risk facing a ship owner is a major navigational incident in spite of the fact that the techniques for safe navigation are well known. When these techniques are professionally executed, navigational risks are reduced.

General Safety Induction Training

Ship recycling industry carries inherent hazards. General safety induction training is conducted to welcome new employees to the company and prepare them for their new role. It help new employees become familiar with their work activities, responsibilities, their colleagues or teammates, and operating policies, procedures, and rules. It serves as a starting point for an organization to introduce a culture of safety in the workplace.

Fire Protection & Prevention

Fire Protection and Prevention measures are put in place to prevent fires from starting and stop them from spreading. In Ship Recycling Industry the employers should have an overall fire suppression program that establishes the location, type and capacity of firefighting equipment such as extinguishers, fire hoses and standpipes, smoke detectors, automatic sprinklers and other fixed firefighting systems in accordance with applicable fire codes.

This course helps on understanding on how to suppress fire and prevent it from spreading and the benefits of this course.

Oil Spillage (Sea & Plot)

Oil spills include any spill of crude oil or oil distilled products (e.g., gasoline, diesel fuels, jet fuels, kerosene, Stoddard solvent, hydraulic oils, lubricating oils) that can pollute the surface of the land, air, and water environments. In Ship Recycling Facility, oil spills occur in plot and also in water. Any type of ship has various tanks to store lube oils, fuel oils and sludge. Sections of these tanks contain oil stains. Oil spills closer to shore and human populations have greater ecological and economic impacts.

This course helps in understanding of Oil Spillage, its awareness, Impact and the cleanup process.

Working at Height

In Ship Recycling Industry most of the work is carried out by the employees, working at height. Working at height is a high-risk activity that refers to work undertaken in any place where, if there were no safety precautions in place, a person could fall a certain distance, resulting in personal injury (e.g. falling through a recycling ship).

This course helps the employees in understanding the risk associated in working at height and how to prevent from falling.

Confined Space Entry

Confined Space Entry

In ships at Ship Recycling Industry, many workplaces contain areas that are considered "confined spaces" because while they are not necessarily designed for people, they are large enough for workers to enter and perform cutting jobs.

This course covers on gaining knowledge on working at confined spaces with safety and its procedures.

Removal of ACM

Asbestos is used for its specific characteristics such as fire resistance, thermal insulation, electrical insulation, strength, flexibility, etc. Therefore, asbestos is used in various locations throughout a ship. When exposed to asbestos, it causes severe health hazards.

This course helps in understanding of asbestos and how its removed and disposed of as per the rules and regulations of the disposal country.

Mock Drill

Mock Drill

The entire ship recycling process is related to gas cutting, heavy plates lifting and their movements, confined space entries, working at a height, etc. Although the workers employed in the yards receive regular training, it is vital for them to participate in mock drills and understand the procedures followed during actual emergencies. Participation in mock drills is the way to make the workers familiar with the methods and equipment which can be used in a crisis.
